The Evil Twins: Jealousy & Envy

Jealousy and envy are not emotions that everyone feels. I heard someone say the other day that every human being is meant to be jealous or envious to some extent; and that it only becomes a problem when you over do it. That is a lie of the devil sold to us to mislead us. Those are ungodly emotions and should not be allowed to find a place in our thoughts. Where it happens, we owe it to ourselves to deal with it immediately. You are empowered to cast that thought out of your mind and God is on your side to enforce the victory He already won for you.

Galatians 5: 19-20NLT “When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties and other sins like these. Let me tell you again as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

The dictionary says envy could be described as malice; also as painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another joined with a desire to possess the same advantage. Jealousy meanwhile is a hostile disposition toward another believed to enjoy an advantage. In truth, the person may not really be enjoying the advantage that you think they are enjoying but you have allowed satan torture you making you fix your gaze on another person instead of on God.

You may just be burning unnecessary emotion that could have been used for something much better. The sad thing is that the person you envy or are jealous of always appears to be doing better than you are doing no matter how hard you try to destroy them. Worse still, you are so occupied with trying to catch up with them or ensure they do not go far, that you do not go forward yourself.

After thinking about these two so much, I have concluded that they must be names of demons-spirits that possess people with the purpose of destroying them. Whenever we identify that the traits we are exhibiting could be described as any of these two, it is expedient that we fight for our lives. Satan comes to steal, kill and destroy so these two emotions come to achieve the same purpose because they are satanic and ungodly. They are not emotions to laugh about. They are seeds of the enemy. Even when we see it in our children, we must do all we can to ensure they understand the need to kill them.

Do you know that murderers did not start always with the intention to kill? Very often, they start with a little envy or jealousy and eventually it ends up with murder because they allowed it fester. They could not bear to see the people anymore and had to do away with them.

The things God has ordained for us are great. Reality is that our God is so great that He has enough to make everyone great and you do not have to destroy another to get to where God has purposed for you to be. As we all pray and pray right, God will begin to release us into the fullness of His plan for our lives.

James 4: 1-2NLT “what is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it from them. Yet you don’t have because you don’t ask for it. And even when you ask, you don’t get it because your motives are all wrong-you want only what will give you pleasure.”

  1. Pastor B, this is BULLSEYE!!! May the Lord continue to give you inspiration by the Holy Spirit to treat these topics that have been disguised as acceptable in the Church today.

The truth is that they are both evil - jealousy and envy. And I do agree that they are twin demons. They are therefore totally unacceptable in a Christian and must be dealt with ruthlessly, the moment we sense the initial stirrings in our minds. May the Lord help us all to discern the reality of our emotions, inspite of ourselves.

  2. Thank you o. It is amazing what tricks the enemy comes up with these days. What is more amazing is our degree of unawareness of the devices of the enemy. It appears that the more literate we become, the less mindful we are of the tricks of the enemy. May God deliver us.

  3. Pastor B, do you know that once I thought jealousy was not THAT bad cos it just meant you liked what the other person had and would love to have it....while envy was the evil one cos it meant you like what the other one had, would love to have it AND would be willing to KILL the person so you could collect her own! Lol!

Now, I just know that both are evil and should have no place in me. After reading this, I began to train myself not to even say it in jest! You know who we say, ' I am so jealous of that your dress oh, its so nice!'. Not sure its something to even say in jest anymore....I mean why joke about being possessed by a demon?

Thank you....More oil, more inspiration on you from the hand of God oh!!!!

  4. Learning something right here. i will also stop joking about it. That really amounts to foolish jesting which the bible says we must stop. Moreover, we are ensnared by the words of our mouth.
    Thank you o jare
